Investing in a reusable water bottle is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste and save money — and they're easier to clean than you think. With more attention on BPA, PFAs, and other "forever chemicals" in plastic, glass has become one of the most popular water bottle materials. If you're not big on the taste of stainless steel or the weight of heavy insulated water bottles, a glass water bottle is a great alternative that feels luxurious. But with so many options available now, which style is right for you?
We've sifted through offerings from our favorite brands to find the most highly rated, durable, and BPA-free bottles on the market. Our editors' picks for the best glass water bottles range in style and size, but all are excellent options for hydrating at home and on the go. Make the switch with the best glass water bottles for all your drinking purposes.
The Takeya Sure-Grip Glass Water Bottle is our pick for best glass water bottle thanks to the overall great drinking experience, ease of use, and effortless cleaning.
The wide mouth on this bottle makes it easy to fill with ice, the straw is extra convenient for drinking, and everything is dishwasher-safe.
It might not fit in all cupholders.
Takeya's stainless steel Actives bottle took the top spot in our insulated water bottle tests, and this glass version is a great alternative. The borosilicate bottle is thermal shock resistant, odor-free, stain-free, and has a safe shell coating that gives it a soft touch and prevents dangerous shattering if you drop it. The lid with straw and foldable spout is leakproof, and the wide mouth is easy to fill with ice. We like the convenient loop on the lid, which you can carry on your finger, attach to a carabiner, or strap onto a backpack to carry it on the go.
The base of the Takeya glass bottle has a helpful silicone bumper to protect from impacts and prevent slipping, but it adds width and might prevent the base from fitting in a cupholder. You can remove the bumper, but then you might crack or scratch the bottle.
Dimensions: 3.6 x 10.4 inches | Capacity: 22 ounces | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes
This glass water bottle comes with both a straw cap and a carry cap. Plus, it has a wide opening so you can fill it with ice or fruits for infusing.
It's rather heavy, which can make it a chore to carry around.
Beast makes powerful but inexpensive blenders (the Beast Mini is one of our favorite personal blenders) that you can always spot by their distinctive ridged glass bottles. The Beast Health Glass Water Bottle gives you one of those lovely bottles, plus a removable straw. The borosilicate glass bottle is heat-proof enough to pour hot water and brew coffee or tea. And it also has a wide opening so you can infuse your water with lemon, cucumber, watermelon, or other fresh ingredients to make tasty iced spa water.
All Beast glass water bottle parts are top-shelf dishwasher-safe, and both the carry cap and straw cap are leak-proof. Our biggest complaint is that the thick ridged glass makes this bottle quite heavy; at two pounds, it weighs almost twice as much as other glass bottles with similar capacities. That makes it somewhat less portable. On the plus side, you can swap out the straw cap for the carry cap on the days when you need extra portability.
Capacity: 25 ounces | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes (top rack only)
This lightweight bottle feels nice to hold, plus it has eight color options and custom engraving.
It's rather expensive.
"This is the perfect everyday option," says Food & Wine writer Kristin Montemarano. "It’s made with durable glass that has a little weight to it but isn’t so heavy that it makes it a hassle to carry water around. I was tired of the metallic taste that can develop over time with steel bottles. This is simple, carries the right amount of water, and the smooth silicone exterior prevents condensation. It also fits into cupholders."
And it's pretty! W&P's storage containers and drinkware come in eye-catching colorways, with eight choices for the glass water bottle including pale pastels and multicolored terrazzo patterns. You can also add up to 28 custom-engraved characters for $10. That means you can put your name on the bottle to ensure you never lose it, or add a motivational phrase instead.
The W&P Glass Water Bottle is dishwasher- and microwave-safe, and it has a compact shape that can fit in almost any cupholder or stow away in a kid's backpack. You do have to pay for the options, though, as this is one of the most expensive bottles on our list even before the cost of engraving.
Dimensions: 2.8 x 9.3 inches | Capacity: 20 ounces | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes
This budget-priced glass water bottle has all the features you need.
It's not ideal for sipping while driving and can only handle cold drinks.
For half the price (or less) of some competitors, the Ello Syndicate gives you everything you need in a glass water bottle. The silicone sleeve protects the bottle and comes in nine colors. The lid screws on securely and flips open with one touch to take a sip without the liquid touching anything but glass. The parts are dishwasher-safe, and the glass won't pick up smells, stains, or unwanted tastes.
If you're a commuter, you might prefer a bottle with a straw — it's easy to spill if you're trying to sip and hit a bump in the car, bus, or subway. Unlike many other glass water bottles, though, it's unsafe for hot beverages; so no steaming coffee or tea for the Ello Syndicate.
Dimensions: 2.75 x 10.75 inches Capacity: 20 ounces | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes
This inexpensive glass tumbler is easy to clean and offers dozens of color and pattern choices.
It's not safe to put in the freezer or microwave and comes with a plastic straw.
If you prefer a straw and don't need to pack your water in a bag or insulated tote, this bottle is great to keep on your desk at work, in your locker at school, or on your bedside table at home. Its pop-on bamboo lid has a BPA-free silicone gasket to make a good seal, and there are nearly 50 options for color and pattern on the removable silicone sleeve. Your bottle will always stand out but won't slide around on the counter or in your hand. In a nice extra benefit, the company will replace your bottle for free if it breaks within a year.
Tronco's bottle has a wide opening that will still fit in cupholders, as do its other available sizes: 16 ounces, 24 ounces, and 28 ounces. It can handle hot or cold drinks, but the glass isn't quite as durable as other brands, and it can't go in the freezer or microwave. The tumbler itself is dishwasher-safe, but the lid and straw aren't. The straw is also made of plastic — it's BPA-free, but a plastic part might defeat the purpose of a glass water bottle entirely.
Dimensions: 3 x 9.3 inches | Capacity: 20 ounces | Dishwasher-safe: Yes (bottle only)
This convenient glass bottle carries far more water than others, and it lets you drink from a spout or straw.
It's too big to fit in most cupholders and is pretty heavy when full.
Looking for a glass water bottle you can take on a day hike or bring from home to the office to the gym without a refill? Mukoko's enormous option might be for you. This bottle holds a whopping 64 ounces, and we love its multi-cap design with a secure-sealing lid and a switch that lets you choose between the (removable) straw and the open pour spout. The wide mouth also allows for ice cubes or whole frozen berries for flavor.
The downside of a half-gallon water bottle is that it has to be big enough to hold a half-gallon of water. The base is almost 4 inches wide and won't fit in most cupholders. There's a large handle that's easy to hold securely, but the bottle weighs six pounds when full; you'll probably want to tote it in a bag most of the time.
Dimensions: 3.9 x 11 inches | Capacity: 64 ounces | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes (bottle only)
Made of thick borosilicate glass that can withstand falls, this bottle comes in three handy sizes and includes time and volume markings.
The twist cap might not be best for one-handed drinking, and a bottle brush is best for cleaning.
If keeping up with your water intake feels like a Sisyphean task, then this clever option from Purifyou could be the perfect solution. With four sizes to choose from and convenient time and volume markings, this glass water bottle is designed to keep you on track. The bottle is also extra durable, with thick borosilicate that can withstand drops and bumps.
In addition to being convenient, the time and volume markings on the exterior are perfect for anyone tracking their daily water intake or trying to stay hydrated for health purposes. And there are even motivational phrases etched onto the other side of the bottle to help you keep going. The small 12-ounce size is great for smaller bags and purses, and the larger 32- and 40-ounce options are work desk staples.
Capacity: 12, 22, 32, or 40 ounces | Dishwasher-safe: Yes | Weight: 15.7 ounces | Fits in Cup Holder: No
For an overall great drinking experience with ease of use and cleaning, the Takeya Sure-Grip Glass Water Bottle is our pick for the best glass water bottle. For a flip-lid without a straw, the Ello Syndicate Water Bottle is another great option at an excellent price.
Glass water bottles range in capacity from 12 ounces (a good compact size for a younger child) to a half-gallon or more (which can last for an all-day hike). If you'll be keeping the bottle at your desk or somewhere else where refills are readily accessible, a smaller option is fine, though it can help to stay hydrated by keeping a big bottle on hand all the time. For long commutes, a larger-capacity bottle is a good idea, too: Nobody wants to run out of water in the middle of a traffic jam.
On the other hand, a bottle that can hold more water will also be larger and heavier. If you'll be bringing your bottle in the car, you'll want to make sure it can fit in the built-in cupholder. Unfortunately, there's no standard cupholder size, but bottles less than three inches wide should fit most designs. If you'll be putting your bottle in a cupholder frequently, it might be a good idea to bust out a ruler and check yours before you pick a bottle to buy. Pay attention to the width at the top as well; a wide-mouthed bottle is easier to fill with ice or pieces of fruit.
The most important feature of the lid of a glass water bottle is that it can hold liquid without spilling. Some lids screw on or pop into place, but most have a silicone or plastic gasket of some kind to ensure a leak-proof seal. Screw-on lids tend to have a more effective seal and are a good choice for a water bottle you'll be carrying in a backpack or purse, but for a bottle that's not likely to spill, it's easier to pop off a lid for refilling.
Glass water bottles generally have a straw or an open spout to dispense water. Straws are convenient and less prone to spillage, but most glass water bottles have plastic straws, which isn't helpful if you're trying to avoid plastic.
The great thing about glass is that it's easy to clean. Glass water bottles don't retain odors or stains like plastic and most are dishwasher-safe. Just check the manual for care instructions: You may need to remove and hand-wash lids, straws, silicone sleeves, or other auxiliary parts. If you're skeptical about the dishwasher, use bottle cleaning tablets or invest in a bottle brush cleaning set for the most effective clean.
A "glass" of water doesn't have a standard size: Our favorite drinking glasses range from seven to 16 ounces in capacity. Recommendations for how much water you need in a day also vary depending on the source you ask, from around 48 ounces to more than 100. Most of the glass water bottles we considered hold 20 to 24 ounces, which means you'd want to fill the bottle up at least three times a day.
If it's dishwasher-safe, use the dishwasher. The strong borosilicate glass used for glass water bottles can withstand the machine. If you're hand-washing, you need hot water, dish soap, and a bottle brush (or sponge if the mouth is wide enough to fit one).
If you plan to store the bottle after cleaning, leave the lid off and let it dry completely before placing it in the cabinet. Lingering moisture can lead to mold growth.
No. Water expands as it freezes and will shatter a glass bottle, especially if it's sealed with a lid. It's generally not a good idea to fill any water bottle and then freeze it, no matter what it's made of. You can fill the bottle with pre-frozen ice cubes if you want water extra-cold. (Plastic and silicone ice cube trays are flexible and have some give to account for expansion.)
Yes. According to the TSA guidelines, there are no regulations around water bottle materials. Glass items are allowed in both checked baggage and carry-on luggage. Your bottle will have to be empty when you take it through security, but you can fill it up before boarding without any problems.
